Hello Dr. Chopra, it seems to me that it’s easy to feel and see love around you if you grew up in a loving environment. But what about the people who grew up in the lack of love? I don’t feel love as my natural state of being, love for me is a struggle, I have to invent it and when I do, I have to make it last and it feels really difficult. Your books changed my life, I see truth in them but there is a wall between me and true joy. My wounds are giant obstacles, and loneliness feels safe because I know nobody can hurt me. How can I trust life if I never trusted the people that brought me up? Im 50 years old, I love life but I don’t trust it. I want to be happy but I don’t seem to make it.

Love is your essential nature. So to feel love and see love around you, you need to be in contact with your true self. Real love is not invented or pretended, it has to be as natural an expression of your life as your breath and heartbeat. Your old wounds and distrust may seem like big obstacles to your happiness, but if you go straight to your core self in meditation, you bypass those distracting stories and simply become that love and happiness.

Question:
After attending a program on Meditation and Yoga, I realized the immense power of the both and have started doing them. My problem is when I sit in silence for meditation and observe my breathing with awareness, my breathing becomes abnormal. It is as if my respiratory system feels some kind of pressure when I am observing the breath go in and out. Soon enough I have to take long breathes and the whole process gets disrupted. I have tried a lot, but it just doesn’t seem to work. So what should I do to improve this situation? And are there any other alternative methods to this type of meditation? Kindly help me through this problem.

Your breath doesn’t have to become quiet and shallow for the meditation to be effective. Trust that whatever the breath is doing, whether you are taking long deep breaths or shallow ones, it is exactly what your body needs at that time to normalize and remove the old conditioning that is ready to be released. Remember your job is just to observe the breath, not control, manipulate, or judge it. Let the meditation do what it needs to do without any expectation on your part.
